Position OverviewThe Deepwater Drilling Engineer will be responsible for the planning, design, and execution support of deepwater drilling operations, integrating advanced knowledge of completions, wellhead, and subsea systems. This role requires close collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective well delivery while complying with industry best practices, international standards (API, ISO, NORSOK), and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Drilling Engineering & Well Planning
- Develop and optimize deepwater well designs, incorporating geomechanical data, pore pressure & fracture gradient models, and offset well performance.
- Prepare basis of design (BOD), well programs, and operational guidelines for deepwater drilling campaigns.
- Evaluate and select drilling fluids, casing strings, BOP configurations, and riser systems for ultra-deepwater environments.
- Model and mitigate deepwater-specific risks (e.g., narrow drilling margins, hydrate formation, HTHP environments).
- Design and review completion programs (upper & lower) for subsea and deepwater wells, ensuring sand control, inflow performance, and stimulation requirements are met.
- Coordinate well integrity management plans, including barrier verification and compliance with Well Integrity Management Systems (WIMS).
- Optimize completion equipment selection for deepwater production and intervention readiness.
- Specify and integrate subsea wellhead and tree systems (vertical/horizontal Xmas trees, HXT) in coordination with OEM vendors.
- Support subsea BOP and well control equipment selection, testing, and maintenance schedules.
- Coordinate installation and commissioning of subsea production systems with drilling and subsea contractors.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with subsea controls, wellhead fatigue, and riser analysis.
- Provide real-time drilling engineering support during execution, including operational troubleshooting and performance optimization.
- Implement lessons learned and continuous improvement practices in well design and execution.
- Liaise with service companies, vendors, and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance and operational readiness.
- Participate in well hazard reviews, DWOPs (Drill Well on Paper), and HAZID/HAZOP sessions.
Essential:
- Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
- Minimum 15+ years drilling engineering experience, with at least 5-10 years in deepwater offshore operations.
- Proven experience in deepwater well design, execution, and completions planning.
- Strong knowledge of subsea wellheads, trees, BOPs, and control systems.
- Familiarity with Landmark WellPlan, Compass, StressCheck, WellCat and other drilling/completions design tools.
- Thorough understanding of API, ISO, NORSOK standards and Well Control (IWCF or IADC Level 4).
- Experience with dual-gradient drilling, managed pressure drilling (MPD) in deepwater.
- Exposure to subsea tiebacks and field development planning.
- Master's degree in Petroleum Engineering or Offshore Engineering.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in complex offshore environments.
- Excellent coordination and communication across multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to manage contractor performance and hold vendors accountable.
- Commitment to Safety, Health, and Environment (HSE) excellence.
